How to Deposit on Polymarket: Complete Guide

How Polymarket deposits work

Polymarket uses USDC (USD Coin) on the Polygon blockchain as its settlement currency. USDC is a stablecoin — always worth approximately $1 — which means your Polymarket balance doesn't fluctuate with crypto prices. The Polygon network is used because it's fast (sub-second transactions) and cheap (gas fees under $0.01).

To deposit on Polymarket, you need: 1. A Web3 wallet (MetaMask is the most common) 2. USDC on the Polygon network 3. A small amount of MATIC for gas fees (usually $0.10–$0.50 worth)

Polymarket is non-custodial — your funds live in your own wallet, not on Polymarket's servers. When you trade, smart contracts hold the funds in escrow until resolution. This is more secure than a traditional exchange but requires you to manage your own wallet.

Important: Polymarket is not accessible to US residents. If you are based in the US, Kalshi is the legal regulated alternative. Using Polymarket from the US with a VPN violates its terms.

Step 1: Set up a MetaMask wallet

MetaMask is a browser extension and mobile app that lets you interact with Web3 applications including Polymarket. It's the most widely used wallet and fully supported by Polymarket.

To set up MetaMask: 1. Go to metamask.io and download the browser extension (Chrome, Firefox, or Brave) or mobile app 2. Create a new wallet — you'll be shown a 12-word seed phrase 3. Write down your seed phrase on paper and store it somewhere safe. Anyone with your seed phrase can access your funds. Never save it digitally or share it with anyone 4. Set a strong password for local access 5. Complete setup — your wallet is now active

Alternatively, Polymarket supports several other wallets including Coinbase Wallet and WalletConnect-compatible mobile wallets. But MetaMask remains the most reliable for desktop use.

Critical: Your seed phrase is your wallet. If your computer crashes or you lose access, only your seed phrase can recover your funds. Store it offline, ideally in two separate physical locations.

Step 2: Buy USDC

You need USDC specifically — not ETH, not regular USD, not any other stablecoin. There are several ways to get it:

Option A: Buy on a centralized exchange (easiest) Sign up for Coinbase, Binance, or Kraken. Complete KYC verification. Deposit USD via bank transfer (free ACH, 2–5 days) or debit card (instant, ~2% fee). Buy USDC. Then withdraw to your MetaMask wallet address.

Option B: Buy USDC directly via Moonpay or Transak Polymarket has a built-in on-ramp via Transak. You can buy USDC directly with a credit/debit card from the Polymarket deposit screen. This is the simplest method but has higher fees (3–5%).

Option C: Swap on-chain If you already have ETH or other crypto, use Uniswap on Ethereum to swap to USDC, then bridge to Polygon (see Step 3). This avoids a centralized exchange entirely.

How much to start with? Polymarket has no minimum deposit. Most beginners start with $50–$200. There's no benefit to starting with more until you understand how the markets behave — use PaperPoly with virtual capital first.

Step 3: Bridge USDC to Polygon

If your USDC is on Ethereum (the default for most exchange withdrawals), you need to bridge it to Polygon before Polymarket can use it. Bridging moves assets across blockchain networks.

Option A: Use the Polygon Bridge (bridge.polygon.technology) Connect your MetaMask. Select USDC. Enter the amount and bridge destination (Polygon mainnet). Approve the transaction. Wait 7–15 minutes for the bridge to complete. You'll now have USDC on Polygon in your MetaMask wallet.

Option B: Withdraw directly from exchange to Polygon Many centralized exchanges let you withdraw USDC directly to the Polygon network — skipping the bridging step entirely. On Coinbase, when withdrawing, select "Polygon" as the network instead of "Ethereum." This is faster and cheaper.

Option C: Buy USDC on Polygon via Transak (no bridging needed) Using Polymarket's built-in Transak integration, you can buy USDC and receive it on Polygon in one step, with no bridging required.

You also need MATIC for gas: Polygon transactions require MATIC tokens to pay gas fees. You need about $1–2 worth of MATIC. Get it by swapping a small amount of your USDC for MATIC using QuickSwap or receiving it via Polygon's gas faucet.

Step 4: Connect your wallet to Polymarket

Go to polymarket.com. Click "Sign In" in the top right. Select MetaMask (or your wallet type). A MetaMask popup will appear asking you to connect — approve it.

Polymarket will create an account linked to your wallet address. No email or password required. Your wallet address is your identity on Polymarket.

Once connected, your USDC balance from your wallet will be visible in the Polymarket deposit flow. Click "Deposit" and follow the prompts to move USDC from your wallet into your Polymarket trading balance.

The deposit transaction will ask you to approve two things in MetaMask: 1. Token approval — allows Polymarket's smart contract to access your USDC 2. Transfer transaction — moves the USDC into your trading position

Both transactions are on Polygon, so they complete in seconds and cost less than $0.01 in gas.

How long do deposits take?

Once your USDC is on the Polygon network and you initiate a deposit on Polymarket, it takes 10–30 seconds. Polygon block times are approximately 2 seconds, and Polymarket's interface confirms after a few blocks.

The slower part is getting USDC to Polygon in the first place:

•Buying on Coinbase + ACH bank transfer: 3–5 business days for the bank transfer, then instant to withdraw to Polygon
•Buying on Coinbase + debit card: 3–7 days for the card hold to clear, then instant
•Bridging from Ethereum: 10–30 minutes for the bridge
•Transak in-app purchase: 5–30 minutes

If you want to trade within the hour, the Transak option (accessible from Polymarket's deposit screen) is the fastest path from zero to trading.

Is there a way to trade Polymarket without depositing?

Yes — PaperPoly lets you trade all active Polymarket markets without any deposit, crypto wallet, or real money. You receive $1,000 in virtual capital, trade at live Polymarket odds, and track your performance over time.

This is useful in two situations:

Before you're ready to deposit: Use PaperPoly to learn the mechanics — how markets price events, how to read order books, how to size positions using Kelly — without the friction of setting up a wallet or the risk of losing real money.

Alongside real trading: Many active traders use PaperPoly to test ideas in markets they're curious about but aren't confident enough to stake real capital on. If a category is consistently profitable in paper trading, that's a signal worth investigating for real-money allocation.

PaperPoly has no deposit requirement and no withdrawal complexity — sign up with an email and start trading within 60 seconds.
